Overview

New Zealand businesses are increasingly aware that respecting human rights is not only the right thing to do - it's also good for business. Many businesses ensure they look after their workers, customers and the communities they operate in by complying with regulations. This is a great start, and it needs to go further. Businesses also need to consider the rights of people in every country that their business has an impact on. Part of this is treating all employees and customers with respect and dignity. Inclusion is important in this regard. Inclusion will also offer innovation, diversity of thought and potential new markets.

Meng Foon

Race Relations Commissioner

Made in Hong Kong – born in Gisborne – working for Aotearoa

Meng was born in Tairawhiti/Gisborne to migrant parents from China. His family’s background in market gardening and owning a vegetable shop provides him with both horticulture and business experience. He also brings 24 years of expertise in local government having served 18 of those as mayor of Tairawhiti/Gisborne.

Foon speaks Cantonese, English, Seyip and te reo Māori. He credits his passion for te reo Māori and te ao Māori to his many Māori aunties and uncles who have nurtured and mentored him over the years.

His use of languages and appreciation of different cultures have contributed to his legacy of building enduring relationships, facilitating and connecting across people and cultures. This led to his appointment as the Race Relations Commissioner in 2019. In this role, his experience in diversity and inclusion adds to his business and governance expertise in helping organisations and communities to achieve better outcomes. He is a strong advocate for equity and equality and offers pragmatic solutions from his diverse experiences.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his whānau and cycles 40kms daily when at home.
