Overview

New Zealand is at a crossroads in terms of energy as it heads towards a zero emissions future. It’s a world of possibilities, but what does the future really hold for New Zealand and Taranaki in particular?

What factors do directors need to be thinking about and putting into effect to ensure the companies and organisations they are connected with can take best advantage of the new energy options that are opening up.

Mark Macfarlane

Mark was appointed Chief Executive, Todd Energy New Zealand in early 2021 he also holds the role of Vice President, New Zealand Upstream Energy with the Todd Corporation (Todd Energy’s parent company).

Mark completed a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Hons) at the University of Melbourne in 1987 and joined ExxonMobil in Victoria. Over the next 10 years Mark held a number of developmental roles in reservoir operations and sub-surface engineering in both Australia and Malaysia.

In 1997, Mark joined Santos and over the next 14 years, he held a range of management and executive roles before becoming CEO of the Santos LNG project based in Queensland in 2010.

In 2013, he joined Tullow Oil, London as Director, Development and Operations and was subsequently appointed Executive Vice President, Africa. Prior to joining Todd Energy, Mark held of the role of COO and was responsible for Tullow Oil’s HSE, exploration, operated and non-operated businesses, and commercial activities.

Dr Cristiano Marantes

Dr Cristiano Marantes is a highly experienced energy sector executive. He has an extensive engineering background and an informed worldview on the potential of technologies and business opportunities that will likely emerge in a low-emissions energy future. Personally, he brings to the position a life-long passion for enabling this future, through strong leadership, innovation and knowledge of new low-emissions energy solutions.

Cristiano has moved from Vector Limited where he held several positions including GM Technology and Innovation, and Head of Engineering. He focused on the design and development of new technology and commercial low-emissions energy solutions. He was also responsible for the design and integration of new technologies such as battery storage, micro-grids, electric vehicles and solar, into the Vector electricity distribution networks. Cristiano was Vector’s representative as a Global Partner for the Elemental Excelerator, which is one of the largest low-emissions energy solution accelerators in the world and there he assisted start-ups with the demonstration and commercialisation of their solutions.

Originally from Portugal, Cristiano holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manchester in the UK.

Cristiano started his position as Chief Executive in mid-2020. He and his wife have two young children.

Andrew Clennett

Andrew is a co-founder and CEO of Hiringa Energy, a company developing New Zealand’s first green hydrogen refuelling network.

He has over 25 years of international experience in the energy sector having held a number of senior management and executive roles.

Andrew holds a Bachelor of Mechanical/Electrical Engineering and is a board member of the New Zealand Hydrogen Association.

He has a passion for bringing together the skills of the energy and clean tech sectors to accelerate our transition to zero emission energy systems.

Wharehoka Wano

Wharehoka Wano (Taranaki, Te Atiawa and Ngāti Awa) is currently Tumuwhakarito (CEO) of Te Kāhui o Taranaki Trust.

He has more than 30 years’ experience working in the education & arts sector. He is the chair of the Taranaki Māori Trust Board and is a trustee on Te  Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa Board and the TSB Community Trust and is known for his leadership locally and nationally on behalf of both the tribal and wider community.
