New Zealand’s border restrictions were ranked as one of the top three impediments to national economic performance by directors in our 2021 Director Sentiment Survey. It is also one of the top five issues facing New Zealand directors in 2022. Now our borders have reopened, what is top of mind for businesses returning to overseas markets or those attracting visitors, talent and students back to our shores?

To discuss the strategies, obstacles and opportunities for rewriting our story on the world stage, we’re hosting a panel session with guests Peter Chrisp, CEO NZTE; Steve Maharey, Chair of Education New Zealand; and Gráinne Troute, Chair of the Tourism Industry Association. The event will be facilitated by Phil O’Reilly ONZM, respected global business leader and advocate, and former chair of the Board of Business at OECD.

The session will look at many of the challenges and opportunities facing our export businesses in 2022 and beyond and will address:

  • Changes in our markets – new, old and changing preferences
  • The impacts of ongoing supply chain dysfunction
  • The risks of inflation and global recession
  • Climate change and Covid-19 impacts on our markets, including the demand for travel

Gráinne Troute

Gráinne is a professional director with many years’ experience of operating customer-focused businesses in highly competitive sectors including tourism, hospitality and retail. She is Chair of Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) – the peak industry body for Tourism in NZ, a Director of Tourism Holdings Ltd, Summerset Holdings Ltd, Investore Property and an Independent Director on the Board of Duncan Cotterill. She is also co-Chair of the Tourism Industry Transformation Plan (ITP) Leadership Group.

In her executive career she was most recently General Manager, Corporate Services for SKYCITY Entertainment Group. Prior to that she was Managing Director of McDonald’s Restaurants (NZ) Ltd and has also held executive roles with consultancy firm Right Management and with Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC).

Gráinne has also spent many years as a trustee and chair in the not-for-profit sector, including having been the Chair of Ronald McDonald House Charities (NZ) for five years. She is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors.

Peter Chrisp

Peter is currently the Chief Executive of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, New Zealand’s international business development agency.  The purpose of NZTE is to “Grow companies internationally – bigger, better, faster – for the good of New Zealand”.

Prior to this, Peter spent 20 years in the engineering, manufacturing, and pulp and paper industries in Kawerau, Oslo, and Sydney covering business in South America, Asia, Middle East, and Europe.

Previous roles have included human resources, operations, logistics and supply chain and General Manager of the Tasman paper mills in Kawerau. He has worked in a global role as Senior Vice President Norske Skog Paper International in Oslo, covering business in South America, Asia, Middle East, and Europe, and has worked in Sydney as Regional President Norske Skog Australasia.

Peter has a Master’s degree in Social Sciences from Massey University and has undertaken additional study in law, marketing, strategy, accounting and finance at universities in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Europe.

Board roles have included the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and the Australian Pulp and Paper Innovation Council.

Pete lives in Wellington, NZ, with his wife Judith and three children. 

Phil O'Reilly

Phil O’Reilly ONZM MInstD is Managing Director of Iron Duke Partners, a Wellington based Public Policy Advisory Firm.  He is a global business leader and advocate. 

He was until recently the Chair of the Board of Business at OECD, based in Paris, which is the representative of businesses in OECD member states and was a member of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organisation based in Geneva.

He has worked closely with the B20, advising G20 leaders and was also a member of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC).

He has acted in both governance and advisory capacities to a number of New Zealand and overseas organisations in areas as diverse as trade, sustainability, diversity, pay equity, manufacturing, tertiary education, child poverty, social welfare and the future of work. 

He was previously Chief Executive of BusinessNZ, New Zealand’s leading business advocacy group, representing thousands of businesses of all sizes.  

Steve Maharey

Steve Maharey is an independent director serving on a wide range of public sector boards including Chair of Education New Zealand.

Between 1990 and 2008 he was the Member of Parliament for Palmerston North and served as a Minister holding a variety of portfolios from 1999 to 2008.

Earlier in his career he was Snr Lecturer in Sociology and a Jnr Lecturer in Business Administration. He was awarded the Companion of New Zealand Medal (CNZM) in 2009.
