Dr Robbie Watene, Tania Wilson and Kerry Pearce look at the importance of disability representation on a board
Change is constant. We live in a dynamic and complex world with globalisation and technology reshaping the business landscape. It is ever more critical that the best talent is sourced for our boards. Boards are at their best when they are distinguished by diversity of thought and capability.
Join us for a panel event with Dr Robbie Watene, Tania Wilson and Kerry Pearce and discover why it is important that people with disabilities are represented around the board table and employed in the organisation.
Thank you to our event sponsors
Dr Robbie Francis Watene is a disability advocate, scholar, leader and Mum from Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Born with a physical disability, she has been an expert advisor to the New Zealand Government on various strategies and policies and began working at the Donald Beasley Institute in 2018, where she is Project Lead for the Disabled Person-Led Monitoring of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Aotearoa, and other disability rights research projects.
In 2018, Robbie completed her doctorate at the University of Otago National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, where her research investigated inclusive and accessible peace building and the experiences of disabled Colombian and Venezuelan refugees and asylum seekers in Ecuador. She is also the co-founder and Director of The Lucy Foundation, an international social enterprise that has developed the world's first value chain of coffee that is entirely inclusive of disabled people - from farmer, to consumer. Robbie currently sits on six governance boards, panels and Crown advisory groups.
Currently the General Manager Tenancy Services at Accessible Properties. Tania is skilled in both non-profit, and business sector management and leadership, and organisational development.
Prior to her current role Tania was the CEO of Momenta Charitable Trust for 10 years. During her tenure Tania transformed what was then a disability day service, under the name of Avalon, to the leading provider of person centred, empowerment based, inclusive services that is now Momenta.
Tania is passionate about creating, sharing, and driving innovations that challenge barriers to inclusion. Furthermore, her sector knowledge, connections and reputation have added significant value and helped to transform the lives of the people within the disability community.
Tania has a strong interest and experience in governance, organisation transformational change, as well as developing thriving and high performing teams and culture. Her governance experience includes positions with Inclusive New Zealand, St Mary’s Catholic School Board of Trustees, You Be You Charitable Trust and Strategic Advisory Group for Humanly, (a social enterprise building workforce capability in Human services.)
Kerry begun her career as a Probation Officer for the Department of Corrections, this led on to several advisory roles within the Department before moving to ACC working in both specialised Case Management and Injury Prevention. After a number of years as a public servant in Wellington, Kerry returned home to Tauranga. Initially taking up a role with the Accessibility Tick Programme before moving to Momenta (formerly Avalon).
Kerry’s role of Social Impact and Communications Lead aims to identify the underserved social needs affecting people with lived experience of disability, and to work in collaboration with thought leaders across the Bay of Plenty to challenge, disrupt and shift societal barriers. As well as using modern story-telling methods to create greater awareness and broader thinking about disability inclusion in the workplace, boardroom and community.
