Patti-Jo Bardsley
Patti-Jo works extensively in both the public and private sector in strategic planning and management training. Patti-Jo also teaches and researches strategy and strategic management, industrial relations, and organisational behaviour at the university of Otago on the Otago MBA program, the Master of Entrepreneurship as well as the Strategic management degree. She also consults on leadership development, strategic management and human capital, within the Executive Education program at the University. Patti-Jo has extensive business experience with her work as a Business mentor , her role as a Registrar at the Employment Tribunal and as a lecturer at the university.
Jeremy Bendall
Jeremy Bendall is a member of the Institute of Directors and a partner in KPMG's Risk Advisory Services division and is based in Auckland. He has completed corporate governance and business risk management assignments across a variety of sectors in New Zealand, South Africa and South America. Client assignments have largely focused on helping directors and senior management to establish a risk aware culture and implement best practice. Jeremy is an active member of KPMG's Global Enterprise Risk Management product development team. Jeremy has been appointed to head Enterprise Risk Management practice for Asia Pacific, and is also the Service Line Leader for Business Performance Services. Jeremy provides risk advisory and corporate governance services to clients in the government, banking, transport, energy, local government, postal, producer board information, communication and entertainment sectors. He was previously Chief Internal Auditor and Risk Advisor for a major New Zealand Bank. Jeremy has a strong interest in supporting the community as evidenced by his previous roles as Chairman of a Youth Centre Trust and School trustee. He is a director of Tennis NZ and a director and Deputy Chairman of Business in the Community (Business Mentors NZ). He regularly presents and has published articles on emerging trends in corporate governance, strategic risk management and Audit Committee best practice.
Rick Bettle
Rick Bettle is an Accredited Fellow and immediate Past President of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. He is also a graduate Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Rick is a Professional Director. His experience includes eight and a half years as Chairman of the New Zealand TAB and four and a half years as Chair of The Racing Industry Board. He has previously chaired NZ Lamb Co. (10 years), Capital Coast Health (four years) and Wrightson Finance (four years). His current directorships of public listed and private entities include Chairman of The Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand and Aviation Security. He is also a director of Southport Ltd and Goodman NZ. Rick was the Managing Director of Wrightson from 1987 to 1991 and the CEO of Alliance Group (a large South Island meat co-operative) from 1991 to 1995. From 1995 to 1998 he headed the law firm of Kensington Swan.
Garth Biggs
Garth Biggs is a member of the Institute of Directors and the principal of Biggs and Company; a strategic-level IT consulting company. He is a non-executive director of an Information Communications Technology (ICT) Services company, and the Executive Director of the HiGrowth Project; a joint industry/government initiative to drive the growth of the ICT industry. He is the former Chief Executive of Gen-i Limited and before that led ICT functions in major New Zealand companies including Air New Zealand, Progressive Enterprises and Sky Television. His career has primarily been in the delivery of information technology solutions to business problems, but he has also held logistics, finance and sales and marketing leadership roles across a range of industries.
David Bignell
David Bignell is a member of the Institute of Directors and KPMG’s Director of Ethics & Independence. He is based in the Firm’s Corporate Governance Advisory Services Group at their Wellington office. He commenced working with KPMG in May 1997.
David advises clients in corporate governance and business risk management. He has managed several significant assignments in both fields for both private and public sector clients. David edited KPMG’s Toolkit for the Company Director and the KPMG Audit Committee Guide. In addition to his practical background in his practice areas, David studied business risk management and corporate governance as part of his postgraduate studies.
Graham Crombie
Graham Crombie is a member of the Institute of Directors and a Partner and Chief Executive of Polson Higgs based in Dunedin. Graham is responsible for the overall operations of Polson Higgs as well as the Business Consulting Group and Audit and Assurance. He is currently Chairman of Otago Polytechnic, a position he has held for the last four years and is also Chairman of South Link Health; New Zealand's largest Independent Practioners Association servicing 640,000 patients in the South Island. Graham is the Vice President of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and currently sits on the Executive Board, Council and is Chairman of the Audit and Risk Management Committee. He is a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and has lectured in corporate governance and control on the MBA programme at the University of Otago.
Souella Cumming
Souella Cumming is a partner in KPMG's Risk Advisory Services based in Wellington. She has over 25 years experience in providing risk management, internal audit and governance services to a range of public and private sector clients in New Zealand and overseas. She has been responsible for the development and delivery of KPMG’s internal audit services since 1990. During that time she has been involved in developing client internal audit plans and strategies based on comprehensive risk analysis, preparing audit programmes, co-ordinating and undertaking fieldwork, co-ordinating staffing requirements, providing training, and performing a quality assurance role. Prior to her involvement in the provision of internal audit and assurance services Souella’s background included providing external audit services to clients in the finance, retail, service and manufacturing industries. Souella manages a number of major outsourced and co-sourced internal audit contracts, and interacts with Boards, Audit Committees and senior management teams. She has a range of experience in risk management and control design and assessment, as well as control self assessment. More recently Souella has been involved in working with not for profit and, government and non-government organisations and has experience of assessing governance structures and working with Board and Audit Committees to implement best practice.
Souella is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, and Chair of the Wellington branch of the Institute of Internal Auditors.
Michael Dunlop
Michael Dunlop is a member of the Institute of Directors. He is the Managing Director of the Acumen Group and has been the principal shareholder since 1995. He had a 20-year career in journalism, strategic planning, sales and marketing, and general management in radio, broadcast television and pay TV in New Zealand and Asia before acquiring Consultus. He held the positions of assistant CEO at TVNZ, CEO of Sky TV, senior vice-president StarTV Hong Kong and CEO of ABN in Singapore. He has also had more than 10 years’ consulting experience within the Acumen Group. Michael provides strategic communication counsel, issues and media management, change management and investor relations for a wide range of clients across the brands. He is on the Wellington Branch committee of the Institute of Directors. Michael holds an MA (Hons) from Otago University, along with a Diploma in Business Administration from Massey University and has attended the Executive Management Programme at Berkeley. He was awarded the New Zealand Medal for Broadcasting for services to broadcasting.
Christine Grice
Christine Grice is a member of the Institute of Directors and an experienced company director with a particular interest in and knowledge of legal and social issues affecting SMEs and the not-for-profit sector and writes and presents seminars in this area. Christine is currently Chair of Te Pou (Mental Health Programmes Ltd) and on the board of Radio New Zealand. She has also just stepped down from Chair of the Perry Group Ltd. She is immediate past president of the New Zealand Law Society. She is a senior partner at the law firm of Harkness Henry and regularly acts as a mediator and arbitrator. She is presently acting Chief Executive of the New Zealand Law Society.
Andrew Hamilton
Andy Hamilton is CEO of The ICEHOUSE (The International Centre for Entrepreneurship) which was established in August 2001 by the University of Auckland Business School. Andy was the founding Chair of Incubators New Zealand the industry group representing incubators in New Zealand, and he’s currently a Board member of ANZATEC – the Australian New Zealand Technology Forum based in Silicon Valley. Prior to joining The ICEHOUSE, Andrew was CEO and Director of Inventure, Fletcher Building’s venture capital arm that he established in 1998. He was also a member of the Advisory Board of Unitec’s Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Chair of the Unitec Accelerator from 1999 to 2001. He has previously been an adviser to the New Zealand Government’s R&D Group and has been Chair and Deputy Chair of past reviews in Bioactives and ICT. Andy is also an active commentator and speaker on matters relating to New Zealand’s small to medium enterprise sector.
Wayne Hudson
Wayne Hudson, formerly with Bell Gully, has recently set up his own firm Hudson Gavin Martin, which specialises in technology and intellectual property law. Wayne has practised law in the technology business sector for over 25 years and has advised many business owners and entrepreneurs on the commercialisation of their technology, the sale and acquisition of technology businesses, capital raising, research and development, protection of intellectual property, establishment of joint ventures and corporate restructuring. Recent clients of Wayne have included Navman, XSol, Ghost, Scion, NIWA, RoamAD, Datasquirt, NextWindow, Medikidz, JRA (NZ), VeCommerce, FIVO, RHE & Associates, Creative Federation and Health TV. Wayne was until recently a trustee of the HiGrowth Project Trust and is currently the President of the New Zealand Software Association.
Jane Huria
Jane Huria is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and delivers governance seminars on their behalf. Jane's broad base of commercial experience includes law, insurance and the financial markets. She has served on a number of public and private sector boards over the past 12 years in the fields of property, electricity, information management, business development, seafood, and workplace insurance. Jane has served on the University of Canterbury Council as a Ministerial appointee and she is a director and shareholder of HSR Governance Limited, a company which specialises in governance, strategy and review. Jane is a member of the Treasury Management Advisory Group, the board of WinterGames NZ, the board of the United Fire Brigades Association, the Health Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal and the University of Canterbury School of Forestry Advisory Committee. She is also deputy chairman of Ilam School and serves on Te Roopu Manaaki, the Maori Advisory board to the board of SPARC. Jane has developed and delivered governance training in the Commonwealth and she assists CCMAU in their potential director selection. Jane is Ngai Tahu and affiliates to Ngai Tuahuriri. She offers assistance in a personal and business capacity to a number of community organisations.
Phillip Meyer
Phillip Meyer is an Accredited Fellow of the Institute of Directors, an experienced company director and investment banker. He is Chairman of Australian Financial Services Group, New Zealand Institute of Management, Central Inc, Deputy Chairman of the Wellington Zoo Trust, a Director of Southern Cross Healthcare Group, Kordia Group Limited, the Wellington Orchestra Foundation, a member of the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of NZ, NZX Discipline and the Wellington Branch Committee of the Institute of Directors. He has a number of other commercial business interests in Australia and New Zealand.
He was a financial adviser in the Sydney Olympics 2000 Bid and advised Australian State Governments on the growth of economic development arising out of the Olympics. He was awarded the honour of being made a Legend of Tourism in recognition of his work for the Australian tourism industry over a number of years and in particular for his contribution to the Sydney Olympics.
Ian Niven
Ian Niven is a member of the Institute of Directors and a chartered accountant with 25 years experience working at CFO and GM level in large companies in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and South-East Asia. He has been CFO for Airways Corporation and was GM Corporate at Transpower until 2002, responsible for that SOE’s corporate functions and sitting on all subsidiary and joint venture boards. Prior to that, he worked in the New Zealand electricity sector in finance and development roles, mainly for Transalta, a Canadian company. He worked for BP for 10 years up to the mid 1990s in New Zealand, London and Singapore his last role being as head of finance for BP’s Asia Pacific region, based in Singapore.
Ian is currently a consultant and director of a number of companies involved in new business activities. Over the past 3 years, he has undertaken a several assignments for the New Zealand Institute of Directors. His special interest is in latest governance theory, particularly in the area of board composition and dynamics.
Wayne Norrie
Wayne Norrie is a member of the Institute of Directors and the Chief Enthusiasm Officer and Minister of Culture at Revera. He has over 20 years IT industry experience ranging fom technical and development roles, to sales and management. With co-founder Roger Cockayne of Hosting and Data Services, they carried out a Management Buy Out (MBO) of Hitachi Data Systems NZ in late 2005 and set about rebuilding a new company brand Revera. Wayne is on the NZTE Beachhead Advisory Board, and also the Hi Growth Board which is tasked with implementing the Government's ICT taskforce recommendations. He additionally serves on the executive of ITANZ, is a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management and is on the Board of Trustees for Hutt International Boys School.
Joanna Perry
Joanna is a member of the Institute of Directors, an independent professional director and chartered accountant. She is a fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and was awarded the 2006 Most Valued Contribution Award. Joanna chairs the Financial Reporting Standards Board, is a member of the Australian Accounting Standards Board and the Trans Tasman Advisory Group on Accounting and Auditing Standards. She has been a member of the Securities Commission for ten years. Her current board appointments include Kiwi Income Property Limited, PSIS, Genesis Energy and AsureQuality. She is also an independent member of the Audit Committee of the Victoria Auditor-General’s Office, a member of the New Zealand Steering Committee of the Australian New Zealand Leadership Forum and a member of the New Zealand Regional Council of Finsia. Joanna was a KPMG New Zealand partner for 17 years until March 2006. She had a diverse range of roles and experience within KPMG. She was involved with many of New Zealand’s significant business transactions over recent years including IPOs (including Vector and Sovereign), the issue of Fletcher Challenge tracking shares, the split of Fletcher Challenge, the formation of Fonterra as well as being KPMG’s National Technical Partner and Chairman of KPMG’s Auckland/Wellington Management Board. Joanna was a member of the Securities Commission for 11 years until earlier this year. She rowed for Cambridge University and Great Britain in her youth and is currently an active kayaker, cyclist, runner and swimmer.
Brian Rhoades
Brian Rhoades is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors and a business advisor and professional director with extensive governance experience. Brian commenced his business career as a lecturer in mechanical engineering at the University of Canterbury and moved on to manufacturing management and general management positions within the AHI/Carter Holt Harvey Group. His most recent executive role was as Chief Executive of Sealord Products Ltd. Brian is currently Chairman of Industrial Research Ltd, the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology Council and Nelson Electricity Ltd. He is a Tertiary Education Commissioner and is a Nelson Millennium Centre Trustee. His widespread governance experience includes chairing the New Zealand Food and Beverage Exporters' Council, and directorships with a number of New Zealand companies and not for profit organisations.
Phillip Roth
Phillip Roth is a member of the Institute of Directors and has had 16 years experience as a Chartered Accountant and Business Consultant. He commenced as a Senior Manager in the local firm of Polson Higgs in May 2000, with responsibilities for Staffing, Training and Business Services Consulting. In October 2003 Phillip was awarded one of the profession’s highest awards by being named New Zealand Young Chartered Accountant of the Year. On 1 April 2004, Phillip was admitted as a Partner within the firm of Polson Higgs. In recent years Phillip has taken an active interest in a number of business development areas in conjunction with his trustee and directorship roles for a number of clients.
Joe Rouse
Joe Rouse is a member of the Institute of Directors and has 18 years of technology business experience in venture capital, executive management, governance and consulting. Now a General Partner with Pioneer Capital Partners of New Zealand, he was a founding partner of MSBi Capital, a venture fund that invests in seed-stage technology companies associated with three leading Canadian universities. Governance roles include the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Ottawa Life Sciences Council, the Business Advisory Committee of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and the Advisory Board of the Carleton University Foundry Program. Joe has also served on the board of early- and expansion-stage technology companies, assisting with strategy, business development, fund raising and mergers-and-acquisitions negotiations, as well as general governance. Since relocating to New Zealand in 2005, Joe has participated in VC-related organizations such as the New Zealand Venture Capital Association, the University of Auckland's Spark and Chiasma iVolve entrepreneurship competitions, and the Price Waterhouse Coopers New Zealand Hi-Tech Awards. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and physiology, and an MBA, both from Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Tim Saunders
Tim Saunders is an Accredited Fellow of the Institute of Directors. Tim was elected to the Board of Contact Energy in 2000, having previously been on the board from 1995 until 1998. He is a consultant with Northington Partners Limited and a member of the Australasian Advisory Board for LEK Consulting. He has been a member of a number of boards over the years including being former Chair of both Feltex Carpets Limited and Solid Energy NZ Limited.
Denham Shale
Denham Shale is an Accredited Fellow of the Institute of Directors, a member of the Institute of Directors' National council, a practising lawyer and a professional company director. He was previously, for seven years during the 1990s, Chairman of one of New Zealand's national law firms. He now practises law on his own account. Denham has been a director of listed companies in New Zealand and Australia for 20 years. He is at present Chairman of unlisted department store chain owner The Farmers' Trading Company Limited and a director of listed companies Oceana Gold Limited, Turners Auctions Limited and Eastern Hi Fi Group Limited. He is also a director of Munich Reinsurance Company of Australasia Limited and several other private companies. Denham is Chairman of the Japan New Zealand Business Council and Mercy Hospice Auckland Foundation.
Debbie Sherratt
Debbie has had 20 years experience as a Chartered Accountant and Business Consultant and Corporate Trainer. Debbie is a Senior Manager in the Christchurch office of Polson Higgs, in the business services area of the firm where she manages a team of business services staff. Debbie’s role consists of managing a client services base by providing business, management and taxation advice to a variety of clients and undertaking external training roles. Debbie authors and facilitates a number of training seminars for continuing professional development for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and other professional bodies. She also provides a range of financial management training courses to both corporate and not for profit entities. Debbie takes an active interest in business development and is a facilitator for a government sponsored business facilitation program assisting start up and existing businesses reach their potential. Debbie has represented New Zealand both in duathlon and athletics and is a past world long course duathlon champion and sportswoman of the year nominee.
Murray Sherwin
Murray Sherwin is a member of the Institute of Directors. He joined MAF as Director-General in November 2001. Murray came to MAF from the Reserve Bank where he was Deputy Governor and Deputy Chief Executive. He joined the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1976, working as an economic analyst. In 1984, Mr Sherwin was appointed Chief Manager of the Bank's International Department. He subsequently held Chief Manager positions in the Financial Markets Department and the Banking System Department. During his career with the Reserve Bank, Mr Sherwin had a number of secondments, including to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Paris (1979); the Prime Minister's Advisory Group (1982-1983); and to the World Bank, Washington DC (1987-1989) where he was a member of the Board of Executive Directors. He was appointed Deputy Governor in June 1995.
Mike Stenhouse
Mike Stenhouse is a member of the Institute of Directors and a Director of Sheffield Limited, based in Christchurch. Mike has been involved in senior executive selection and consulting on organisational development matters for over twenty years in the South Island market. In addition to working with a cross section of private and public sector clients on senior selection assignments, Mike also has an interest in governance issues, organisational performance and human resource best practice. He currently holds several external Directorships with both not for profit and commercial entities.
Trish Stevenson
Trish Stevenson is a member of the Institute of Directors and an experienced company director, facilitator and presenter based in Wellington. She was a Director of Television New Zealand from 2000-2006 and for three years was Chair of the Audit Committee. She was also a member of the NZ On Air Board from 1996-2000. Trish has worked in and with a number of companies in the creative and media sectors and spent six years in exporting as International Manager at educational publisher Learning Media. Trish also assists companies to generate new business strategies
Sue Suckling
Sue is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Directors. With over twenty years governance experience, Sue has gained an exceptional profile and reputation throughout New Zealand's business community. Sue's governance experience covers the following economic sectors: agriculture, international marketing, electricity, education, health, banking, science and technology, manufacturing, education, service sectors, sports and recreation, communications and government. Sue's current governance interests include: Director, HSR Governance Ltd, Managing Director, Acemark Consulting Group, Chairperson, New Zealand Qualifications Authority, Chairperson, NIWA, Member, Takeovers Panel, Chairperson, Barker Fruit Processors, Director, Restaurant Brands Limited, Chairperson, GIPI - Industry Advisory Board, Member, Climate Change Leadership Forum and Chairperson, Educational Review Office - Risk & Assurance Committee.
Don Trow
Don Trow is a Distinguished Fellow of the Institute of Directors. Don holds the position of Emeritus Professor of Accountancy at Victoria University of Wellington having been Professor since 1971. He has served as a director of the New Zealand Stock Exchange from 1989 to 2002, was a director of the Northland Dairy Company from 1993 to 1997 and in 1999 was appointed a director of Ryman Healthcare. Professor Trow has also served as Chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Statutory Managers of the Equitcorp Group of Companies since 1989.
Richard Westlake
Richard Westlake is an Accredited Fellow of the Institute of Directors and has an MA from Oxford University. He has a record of leading significant change in complex and large organisations in New Zealand and Australia, largely in the banking and finance sector, in executive management, director and chairman roles, including both the private and public sectors. He runs his own governance consulting business, advising all types of organisations on corporate governance and strategy, throughout New Zealand and overseas. Richard is an experienced company director with over 15 years experience as a director and board chairman. He is currently Chairman of the Standards Council of New Zealand and a large research joint venture, Better Border Biosecurity. Among his earlier roles he was the Chairman of two State-owned Enterprises, MetService (from 1992) and Quotable Value (from 1998), and was independent Chairman of the Holmes Consulting Group. He is an independent director of Kiwibank, where he Chairs the Audit and Risk Committee and deputy chair of Wellington Water Management Ltd. His not-for-profit experience includes a long involvement with organisations as diverse as Canterbury Opera (chairman for 6 years), the Centre for Advanced Engineering, Dexcel Trust and AirCare Trust.
Derek Williams
Derek Williams has nearly 30 years banking experience with the Bank of New Zealand, with 20 years in leadership roles in the BNZ’s Risk Management, Strategic Business Services division, specialising in Corporate, Business and Agribusiness turnarounds, mergers & acquisitions and insolvency assignments. The key objectives of Strategic Business Services are the protection of all stakeholders’ interests, not just the Bank’s, and ultimately preservation of shareholder value, where possible. Derek has presented various papers on Insolvency topics and sat on Bankers Panels at Insol New Zealand, a special interest Group affiliated closely to the Institute of Chartered Accountants.
Christien Winter
Christien Winter is a member of the Institute of Directors and is Managing Director of Sheffield Ltd. She joined the firm in 1986 and has undertaken a broad range of human resource consulting assignments. Much of Christien's consulting work is in executive search and selection, but she also undertakes other consulting work and is a certified facilitator of DDI Learning Programmes. Prior to joining Sheffield, Christien worked in the United Kingdom for an international computer leasing company with responsibility for coordinating sales administration, engineering, transport and distribution as well as the administration of lease finance.
