Being an astute director means taking the opportunity to keep abreast of the
latest developments in corporate governance at all career stages. We recognise
your need for continuous upskilling due to constant changes in the business and
legislative environment and the ever increasing expectations placed on directors.
The Institute of Directors’ professional development programme for 2008 is designed to meet the needs of directors at each career stage and accreditation level. Our philosophy is to provide practical courses based on actual director experience using a model of “for directors, by directors”.
The programme is based on a competency framework which encourages the development of core competencies in the areas of knowledge, personal characteristics, personal skill and group skill. The honing of these skills through ongoing board experience and specialist development training is essential to developing directors who can truly add value to their organisations.
The IoD offers a four level curriculum from threshold through to mastery. These levels are not prescriptive but should act as a guideline of career stage as individual director experience levels will vary depending on the type, size and operation of the organisations with which directors are involved.
Please refer to the ‘at a glance’ diagram below
Please note: this table is a guideline only
Threshold
Threshold courses bridge the gap between management and director perspectives on governance and provide essential skills for new directors. These courses can stand alone, or as a series, to establish a base level knowledge of corporate governance.
Threshold courses: Governance Essentials,
Regional Directors' Development Programme,
Finance Essentials,
Strategy Essentials,
NFP Governance Essentials and Governance for Rapid Growth Companies.
AcquisitionAcquisition courses encompass intermediate levels of understanding. At this level it is expected that senior managers preparing for directorship and directors at an early stage in their careers will already have a base level of understanding. The Company Directors’ Course is a prudent step for those considering longer term careers in directorship. Topic specific extension courses are also available at this level. Further extension topics such as information technology governance will be developed for delivery in future years.
Acquisition courses: Company Directors' Course, Effective Audit Committees and Governance for Listed Companies
Experience
Experience level courses are aimed at directors with 3-5 years experience and new or potential chairs. They reflect the need for directors to upskill after they have attended the CDC and gained experience at the board table. Courses at this level are intensive and fully interactive and create an opportunity for experienced directors to update themselves and debate current issues with their peers.
Experience courses: Chairing the Board and Senior Directors' Workshop.
Mastery
Mastery is the highest level of competence, representing the skill levels of established chairs and directors with at least 5 years experience. At this level, the Company Chairman’s Workshop provides a collegiate, seminar-like environment in which highly experienced directors can refresh their knowledge and network with others of similar standing.
Mastery course: Company Chairman's Workshop
Members attend Professional Development courses at significantly lower rates than non-members.
