The IoD began 40 years ago as a division of the Institute of Directors in the UK. In 1989 the Institute of Directors in New Zealand (Inc.) adopted its own constitution and became a separate legal entity. During the last decade, membership has grown significantly.

We support and represent members by:
- Providing members with the knowledge of best practice and encouragement to apply it.
- Representing member interests and positively influencing stakeholder opinion and policy on governance issues.
- Enhancing the prestige and value of membership by providing high quality services that underpin the Institute of Directors’ profile as a world class professional body.
The IoD maintains strong international links. In association with six other leading director institutes from around the world, the Institute of Directors in New Zealand (Inc.) is a member of the Global Director Development Circle (GDDC). The GDDC is an internationally recognised association for professional membership
organisations focused on the development needs of directors and boards. The aims of the GDDC are to promote excellence in corporate governance and improve director and board professionalism through research, education, dialogue and advocacy.
The IoD is also affiliated with professional bodies for directors throughout the world through its membership of the International Corporate Governance Network (ICGN). The ICGN is a leading international forum for the advancement of corporate governance worldwide.
